Do any of you out there in Yahoo-land have bad side effects from taking BP medication? I am talking about extreme muscle weakeness in arms and legs, and extreme tiredness? Have you had any help in changing to somerhing else that had less bothersome side effects? Is it true that an older person cannot tolerate these drugs as well as a younger person?? Thanx!

Maresee, these side effects are COMMON for alot of people, thus the reason for ALOT of different medications! One CAN find one that will help. Best to ask the Dr. for SAMPLES, rather than spend your all your money on pills you KNOW you can't or won't take, after several doses.

For me the BP med I was on, made the ROOM SPIN when I laid down. I did NOT like that and stopped the med right away!

Course now, I work at it, but NO more BP meds!
Not everyone can do that of course....

As for how they affect OLDER people, you are on the money there. Older do NOT process meds like the younger folk...

Well I dont think that you can have that severe muscle weakness and tiredness, I mean I take BP medication for HBP and dont experience those.

Some of the well knwon side effects are :
Loss of Sex Drive
Dizziness
Tiredness

If you are taking HBP meds, you are probably OD'ing a bit and that is causing these effects. Are you fainting? Do you feel dizzy. I hope you go see your doctor about this.
It is true that Older people cannot tolerate these drugs as well as a younger person, but that is true in all drugs.

Older people don't tolerate it as well. I was reading a book...Over Dose by Jay S. Cohen, M.D.. He says usually drug companies have a recommended starting dose too high, and doctors usually start at the recommended dose. These are often tested on healthy young adults. Depending on the medicine, maybe you can get your doctor to cut your dose in 1/2. Also drug companies push new medicine, where some of the older less expensive works as well. Also there can be interactions with other meds, or some organic, herbal suppliments. You may need to check this out too.

I just started taking BP meds and do feel tired a lot and do feel the weakness you describe. It is not overwhelming and I don't see any reason to switch at this point. I am going to see if gets better as I adjust to the dosage.

If it is as bad as you say, you should call your doctor and get the medication switched to a different type. Or they may just lower the dosage. Either way, you need to get your doctor involved.

Most prescription medications have side effects and some of them are very severe. Natural remedies in general have far fewer side effects but they are generally slower acting so you may need a combination of them.
