how do you find out if a stage names taken?

When you join SAG or AFTRA you can ask if the stage name you want is taken, if you noticed, most actors no longer use stage names.

Unfortunately, there are many times that you won't find this out until you apply to the Screen Actors Guild or to AFTRA. You can contact either organization and see if they'll help you, though they will frequently tell you to wait until you're eligible to apply.

Google the name, or I've heard bands get lawyers in case Someone Already has that name, and think of filing a lawsuit.
