Bamboo needs to be fed food that has Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron & trace elements in it to grow strong and keeps it deep green colour.

If you have clumping bamboo, you will find summer is the shooting time for that type of bamboo and if its the running bamboo, spring is the time for new shoots to grow.

One thing to keep an eye on is Scale on your bamboo. Some species of bamboo are more prone to attack from the horrible bugs than others.

I have a species of bamboo growing in my yard for privacy called Bambusa oldhamii and I am having problems with these bugs. They literary suck the life out of your bamboo. So please take a close look at your bamboo and make sure you don't have this problem. Those bugs are really hard to get rid of once they take hold.

The other thing I nearly forgot to mention is you can use gray water on your bamboo. Bamboo grows great using gray water. I have been watering my bamboo with gray water for the last three years because of water resritctions where I live.
I also spoke to the people I bought my bamboo off to make sure it was ok to use gray water and they said it's all right to use.

Many bamboos trees are extremely agressive. They put out runners underground that cause the bamboo to spread rapidly. They usually need no help. If you think you need to then use a balanced food like Miracle-Gro or similar.

I have heard the reason most of them die is because of the water. They are supposed to be watered with distilled water only.
