The car will start right up again but I have to step on the gas to keep it running. I then put in a splash of oil and the light goes off and it runs fine.

sounds like you have an oil circulation problem, possibly oil pump. this is serious business and I would have it inspected ASAP, hopefully its still under warranty

Some cars are designed to shut off the engine with low oil pressure or low level to prevent the engine from being wrecked. You should never let the oil level get below the add mark on the dipstick especially with 4 cylinder cars. Top off the oil and make sure the car is on level ground when you check it. Change oil and filter every 3000 miles.
