It's not too bad. People usually mess up the pulley trying to get it off the pump. It's a lot easier just spending the extra $15 for a new pulley when you buy the pump.

Removing the pump is not too difficult. It is mounted in a reachable place and requires just a few tools.
The previous posted mentions the pully. This is not a concern nowadays. 1) Most of these type parts now come with the pulley attached. In most cases, you just mount the new pump. 2) If the pulley is not on there or it's the wrong size, the parts store will remove/replace the new/old pulleys.
Back in the old days, parts stores would not do this.

It's not a hard fix at aii. Spend the $12.00 to $15.00 and buy yourself a Haynes Repair Manual for your Explorer. It will tell you step by step how to change the pump. And don't listen to the garbage about special tools. I do this for a living and it only takes a couple of wrenchs, and a little common sense. You can do it, no problem.

the pump is not a problem but a special tool is needed to remove the belt pulley.

It is a dirty job, but not hard if you have the right tools.
