how open do i leave shock

when the wheels are straight it should be half way out so it can travel both ways the same ....

If you're adding one, you need to mount it in such a way that it does not interfere with or prevent the steering rod travel from right to left. Most add-on stabilizers have instructions that show how to adjust it properly. If it's an original setup, just bolt the new one in place of the old....it may have part of the stem exposed with the wheels pointing straight...some shocks come with rubber or plastic boots that cover the stem to protect it from road salt and debris.
Had a 73 Chevy 3/4 ton plow truck and mud dragger and the steering shock was invaluable.

there should be a mount on the axle tube and the opposite side mounts to the tie rod end.

if you didnt buy it yet then dont, they are a waste, they are a bandaid for hiding other suspension parts that are worn out.

i have a 99 Ram with 37" tires and a 88 K5 with 40" tires, i dont run a stabilizer on either one.
