what exactly is the status on the MFA in creative writing in regards to it being acceptable for teaching in a university/college?

is it as respected as the PhD?
are the jobs comparable to a PhD?
is the salary comparable to a PhD?
etc.

Well, an MFA is a terminal degree so in that respect it is similar to a PhD; however, the emphasis of a PhD is usually research whereas for an MFA, it's your own creative work.

With an MFA in writing you can apply for faculty positions but a lot it is up to particular departments. I think often English/literature departments would rather hire someone with a PhD and an established research area so they can teach a broader range of classes. I know a lot of MFAs in poetry who end up doing adjunct teaching in English departments, which might not be ideal for some people's career tracks but they like it because it offers them institutional affiliation and an income while they work.

As far as salary goes, regardless of whether you have a PhD in Lit or an MFA in some type of creative writing, the salary isn't overwhelming.

While MFA programs are pretty wonderful once you're in them, getting into them is a nightmare. Most have lower acceptance rates than law school, med school, or grad school.

In theater, art studio, and creative writing; the MFA is the terminal degree and is considered for faculty appointment and tenure as equivalent level.

As was said, the real difference is that the MFA is a doing degree whereas the PhD is a research degree.

Keep in mind however that the subject matter of an MFA in Creative Writing isn't the same as that of a PhD in Literature. The former will be useful getting positions to teach freshman comp and creative writing courses but the latter will be required to teach the upper level lit. courses.

The equalizer will be publication. If you are well published and have an MFA, doors open.
