WHY OR WHY NOT?? And if you already have what was your experience?

Yes, I have, and No, I do not, not anymore, not for many years.
I also used to hitchhike myself all over the western U.S. .... back in the early 70's when this was more common, though not a lot less dangerous perhaps.

I don't pick up hitch hikers anymore for the same reason I don't hitchhike anymore: it's not safe, esp. not for a woman alone.

My experiences as a hitchhiker were mostly okay, and picking them up, i never had a problem, but I did not make a habit of the practice.

However ... these days ... it is not safe for a woman, alone or with another woman, nor a man who has a woman with him. And even men who pick up hitch hikers can be in danger. Why take the chance?

I like to think that I am smarter and wiser these days, and this is behind my decision.

EDITED NOTE:
Both my husband and I have been known to help stranded motorists ... under the right circumstances ... this is different ... but still to be met with caution and wisdom.

we have and i'm still ticked at my husband for it.

we were in a 24hr grocery store one night and we saw this lady wandering around like she was lost. my husband rolled down the window and asked if everything was okay. she said her ride left her and she was from out of town and didn't know how to get back to her hotel. it was obvious to me she was lying but my husband offered to give her a ride. the hotel she directed us to is a notorious drug and prostitution place. he of course is completely clueless. when we got to the hotel he told her we would wait to make sure she got in her room okay. she went and knocked on the door and several rough looking guys came out. i hit my husband and told him "you idiot, you picked up a prostitute!" he still has not lived that down. when ever we're fighting i can always come back with. "well at least i don't pick up hookers!"

In today's society i would not because of the rise in numbers of sex offenders. maybe if i grew up in the 60's or 70's. trust is bad towards complete strangers. people should have to earn trust and to many times people just give it away!
