Can this job be done by myself or my husband? If so, where do we start and is a strong vacuum cleaner ok to use or do I need an industrial vacuum? thanks for the help.

you can do it yourself, but expect to make a hugh mess. It really is worth the $ to let some pros do it. they already have all the right tools and expirence.

DIY, borrow or rent a wet/dry vac. start at a duct.. farthest from the furnace. [turn blower off] put hose on blowing side, blow a strong string ,Thur to next duct,[remove duct covers] tie a brush or rag to string, as you pull it back thru the duct have vac at duct your pulling thru on vac side, vac the dirt as you pull brush thru duct, work as close to the blower as you can , in this manner, if you can get into the duct after it comes out of the blower, work away from blower like this,
