The earth has had seasons icew ages come and go.
Once there was less water and the gulf of Mexico was a saline land locked sea. See reference one. It's about ice ages.
Use footnotes when quoting things !

So the Earth was coming out of an Ice Age and the 2nd reference is how mankind sure has contributed
