Why don't we see immigrants wanting to go and settle in non-western countries? Lots of people from all over the world flock to Europe and N. America to selttle and eventually get naturalised and have local nationality. There are lots of people who go and live and work in a non-western country, but they don't get naturalised or take up the local nationality. Why is that? Of course there are immigrants in the West who do not want to be naturalised or hold the local nationality, but they are a minority.
Does that mean western countries have more to offer than other countries in the world?

Well, since that is where they are immigrating FROM, it only makes sense that they obviously don't have there what we have here.

In the UK it is to do with accessing healthcare, and a lot of people come here temporarily for 'health tourism'. This is documented. However it's got a lot tighter over here in the last ten years (despite all the media reports). The reason immigrants get priority housing is the system is on a points scheme, and generally if you're an immigrant you get more points and get put forward to the top of the queue. This engenders racism which was probably there anyway and makes it worse.

In response to the people who don't like working to support those on welfare, I feel glad to have a welfare system, lucky to have one if ever I need it. I don't mind working to support others, as long as my taxes don't go up drastically. I feel grateful to have good health to be able to get up and work, it gives me self respect and self esteem, no matter how hard and horrible a time I am having of it for work is not always easy and I am often tired. I do it for the man upstairs, not myself and not for anyone else no matter how needy. Therefore I feel no burden in working when others don't. It is a blessing to be able to :-)

Who said. Countries like Cuba, Vietnam, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Jordan, Qatar, Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil (I cant go on) are packed with western immigrants. Its swings and roundabouts. And the key word is immigrants.

People go where they think they are better off. But frankly its all in the mind. Since you do ask I will explain in detail what is what. Let us say that one of us westerners wins say £5,000,000 on the lotto, what is the first thing we do. Book a flight away from here, that's what. and where do we go? Somewhere quiet with a beach and a secluded house away from traffic and noise and big yards of land around us, no?

Well most of these immigrants actually come here from these places. Attracted to the bright lights. Little do they know that their quality of life was in fact worth £5 000 000.

Conned by the media.

Because you can get paid a lot more for working in western countries. Also there are all sorts of privilages..like the nhs, which is why people are desperate to gain citizenship. This is also why countries are so desperate to join the EU..because any member of the EU can live and work in this country without a visa, which is why so many foreigners are pouring into Britain at the moment.

The standard of living is generally better, as is material wealth and job prospects.

A lot of the indiginous population of western countries get peeved when the immigrants try to alter the culture and appear ungrateful for the hand of friendship that has been offered.

We don't live in those countries so what's going on in them doesn't make our news. Americans don't usually care what's happening elsewhere and wouldn't watch that news any way.

Yes, we have more to offer. Maybe we're more tolerant of newcomers than some other places, e.g. Japan. Or maybe we have more to offer because we've used some of those non-western countries for our proxy wars, for dumping products and junk we don't want cluttering up our landscape, and for raw materials at low prices. Lots of folks moved out of Appalachia, too, because living there became impossible after outsiders got through taking everything of worth that was there.

In the western world we have more employment, better benefits and better health systems, but the people here can be quite racist so the immigrants have to adjust to our culture or they will have a very tough time. It's not that our countries are better, we just have more of what people need.

I'm going to agree with Barbara A on this one. Well said. Westernized countries offer a lot to immigrants who have jack crap in their own countries. And it's cool that people want to live good, but I cannot tolerate having to bust my a-s for people who want a free ride. And to be fair, there are plenty of citizens who have been born in the U.S. who also drain the countries resources by sitting on their fat behinds. The U.S. (can't speak for any others) is the land of opportunity for sure, but what ever happened to everyone WORKING for what they have? It seems like there are more and more government (aka my tax dollars) hand outs everyday. Now I'll get off MY soapbox:)

Not too difficult- its actually less onerous than gaining citizenship in most other countries. The basic requirements are: 1) Means to support yourself (either from money being brought in or having a job) 2) Live in the county for 3 years out of five 3) Renounce previous nationality in favour of Israeli citizenship (though it is common practice for this to be rescinded and to allow dual citizenship) As for property, it is different to most countries since only 20% of land is privately owned and the rest is leased. Privately owned land can be sold to non-citizens freely. Leased land can be leased to anyone and it is common for non-Israeli citizens to own apartments and other properties in Israel.

Why does everyone go to MacDonald's?
Or to see a film?

Because they advertise. America advertizes. How often have you heard "this is the best country?" "Land of opportunity," "The American Dream," "Made in America."
We display our power in wars and battles, constantly, we show our might in countries just to maintain peace.

We advertize.

Now, if you were poor and needed to figure out how to make money, where would you choose to go?

Listen to the advertisements, everybody else does in every other situation. Can we blame them for buying into the hype?

once said to see how well off a country is, judge the number of people that want in to those that want out. Some of us do not realize how well off we are.
