Alimony is based on the woman and children living the same lifestyle as when she was married. The legal precedent IS based on the idea that the woman cannot provide for herself...
HOWEVER...
this does not give anyone license to hold up alimony as an example of reverse discrimination, especially these days.
Alimony is on the way out. Anymore, it is overwhelmingly only awarded to women who married and had children young, are keeping the children, and are continuing to raise said children in more or less the exact same manner, just minus one dad. It is also only awarded, these days, to women who have solid grounds for divorce (in the Catholic sense, provable abuse or infidelity) or in cases where the man has just decided to leave.
Meaning, a woman filing for divorce will usually only get alimony at all in the above situations. That's pretty fair. Child support is the big one these days. Overwhelmingly, men do not get stuck with alimony these days.
Remember the tv show, 'The Odd Couple.' Yea, it was a Broadway play, a book, etc. That was the era when alimony was way out of line, and has been on rapid decline.

Lioness men and women are treated differently when it comes to alimony. A man earning more than the women wouldnt get the same amount of alimony if the roles would be inversed. Alimony is beeing done away with though. More and more is beeing shifted in child support. While you used to pay 600 in child support and 400 in alimony now you pay 1000 in child support.
Childsupport IS alimony, there is virtually no difference between child support and alimony, except for the fact that you must have children to qualify for child support.

Please know that men also collect alimony. Alimony historically evolved for women who did not work outside the home and did not have a marketable skill in the workforce.
(This only means that women were not given credit for the many skills they developed and polished while raising kids, keeping a budget, a house and so forth)
I am inclined to believe that today, there are still some women who live the old fashioned values...my hats off to them.. who may need temporary support while getting on their own feet. Then there are the really greedy, lazy, spoiled rotten women and men who believe that life owes them something....(in this case...a right to not work for the rest of their lives if the alimoney is enough). In my view, we must take responsibility for our own lives..women and men..and be self supporting. If I cant afford that $100K car on my own, then maybe I need to get rid of it and learn to live within my means. I would not want to be an albatross on anyones neck....my self respect would diminish.

Why would anyone need alimony? If they had children, she already gets child support. If they didn't have children, then she needs to get up off her lazy @zz and get a J-O-B.
