I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I bet you bent the crankshaft too. Try this first, disconnect the spark plug and tie the safety handle down. Tip the mower with the carb side up, try to rotate the blade. If it turns freely the crankshaft probably is not bent. However if it doesn't turn freely the crankshaft is bent and must be replaced. Sorry!
Hope this helps.

sounds like you may have bent shaft or over torqued the piston ... I would offer to remove the wire from the spark plug and look underneath to make sure the blade is not blocked by something and can spin freely .. If it turns take the spark plug out and see if you can pull the cord all the way out when there's no compression to deal with. If you can, then you've simply encountered a compression lock up. Good luck

Remove the spark plug and see if the engine will turn. You will have to hold the engine brake handle too. Normally when you hit something like that you shear the key between the flywheel and the crankshaft. You can also bend the crankshaft. Stopping the engine that suddenly can also break the connecting rod. Check to see if you can turn the engine by hand. Be sure to remove the sparkplug/plug wire first. Check to see that the blade doesn't wobble. Remove the engine cowling and check the engine brake, it may not be releasing.

Sounds to me like you bent something inside that is stopping the blade from turning. Better have it looked at or take it apart yourself.

Good luck!

Buy a new mower. You probably bent the main shaft when you hit that stump.
