Ever since he came up to big leagues with Pittsburgh in the early 1990's, Barry Bonds has been viewed by his managers (Leyland, Baker), his teammates (VanSlyke, Kent), his opponents (Plantier) and the press (too numerous to mention) as being nasty, condescending and just a downright jackass. Even before he was a home run hitter - with about 25 a year and a .260 AVG - Sports Illustrated was documenting how he was so nasty. I've never figured out why. He's rich, has children, is famous, is successful ... etc. etc. So why the sour personality? Is it an emotional disturbance, an abusive childhood, drugs, an act? I've wondering about this for almost 15 years. And PLEASE don't make this a race issue.

Bonds was a jerk before he even made it to the majors. He has always had a sense of entitlement that surely started with how his parents raised him, & has only been enhanced by those he has come in contact with throughout his life. For example. Once when he was at Arizona State, the manager decided he had had enough of his antics (not showing up for team meetings or showing up late, prima donna antics, etc.) and called a team meeting to teach him a lesson. He told Bonds that he was fed up with him & was ready to kick him off the team, but that he would put it to his teammates for a vote. Barry was absolutely the best player on the Sun Devils & the manager figured that the team would not vote off their best player. Bonds was sent from the room & to the managers amazement, the team voted him gone. The manager backtracked on his statements & kept Barry on the team. Which only furthered his sense of how great he was. It doesn't take too many incidents like that to have an effect on someone. His personality is just who he is & always has been. He was a jerk when he was a kid, he was a jerk as a teen, he was a jerk when he broke into the majors, he's a jerk now, & barring divine intervention he will pass from this world as he lived in it. A 100%, full-blooded, sullen, defensive, sarsastic, jerk. He may be just another in a line of baseball greats who were despicable human beings (Ty Cobb, John McGraw, Denny McClain, & Pete Rose to name a few) but that doesn't make it any more acceptable.

First of all, he came up in 1986. He hasn't hit less than 25 HR's or batted lower than .270 in a full season since 1989. So your numbers are a bit off.

He has been misquoted, and used as the scapegoat for every post season loss by the media since his rookie year.

Jeff Kent is 1 of the least liked players in recent memory (was always jealous of the attention Bonds got, so he used to bash him in a feable attempt to get some of the spotlight.)

He's only like that when irritating reporters or "fans" ask him about stupid questions related to his taxes, drug use and marital issues that don't concern the public.

I've met him at my place of employment (EA Sports) as well as in my neighborhood. He's definitely genuine, kind hearted and loves meeting his fans. After he got his knee scoped, outside my neighborhood Jamba Juice, he greeted all his fans, shook hands, signed autographs, chatted with everyone and posed for pictures, even though he was in obvious pain. He was not short or impatient at all! He accommodated everyone that afternoon!

At work, he was much the same as described above and since he's a celebrity, he never acted bigheaded, never acted like a jerk, did not act like he was above anyone, and did not act like he was God.

He is just a normal person that got sick of people making stories up about his personality and gets bitter when reporters don't give him any respect and just rip into him without any provocation.

Barry has issues, no doubt, but I don't recall that he had issues with Dusty Baker, and according to sports radio here in SF, Jeff Kent was the cancer in that duo of disfunction.

One thing that I heard once was that he recalled vividly the way the press had allegedly mistreated his dad. I don't know if that is true or not, but he supposedly resented that quite a bit.

Barry has daddy issues.
It has been his mission to get out of the shadow of his father. When he started playing ball, it was always, "Here is Bobby Bonds son up to bat, I wonder of he will be as good as Bobby was..."

I wonder how many times Barry has heard, "Barry is the son of Former All Star Bobby Bonds"

All these deep rooted issues are at the core of a man who truly thinks his is Divine. God's Gift To Baseball syndrome.
Athletes in general have a tendency to be cocky, but Bonds truly believes that he was Heaven sent as a gift to the sport. And for all this, we all owe him something.

Guys like Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Cal Ripken. words that describe these men are Humble, Classy, Gentlemen, Integrity. Words like these will never be in the same sentence as the name Barry Bonds. (and this is not because of steroids, its because of his attitude.)

But then maybe I am wrong, and the real reason he is so bitter and mean is because the steroids made his manhood shrivel up and stop working.

I'm not a Giants or Pirates fan, so correct me if I heard wrong... but I remember something a while back about how he felt his father was disrespected by the media in his dad's playing days, so he's just returning the favor.

Because he enjoys baseball fans, managers, players etc... to hate him. Think about it. If they really liked him, and respected him,"they" would leave him alone, and let Barry do what Barry does best.

I don't know, but Barry Bonds stayed at the hotel my dad works at, and my dad said that he seemed really mean. My dad was going to ask for an autograph, but didn't because of his attitude. And the thing is, no one was talking to him, he just seemed mean for no reason.

He's just a jerk. We all know jerks. Some jerks have money. Some jerks have talent. Unfortunately, some jerks have both.
