Subaru is a division of Japanese conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries Co. LTD. The company is affiliated with Toyota Motor Corporation which owns 8.7% of FHI. Simple answer: they are a Japanese company just like Totoya, Nissan and Honda.

They're built in Japan by Fuji Heavy Industries. In Japan the name is pronounced a bit differently than here. The accent is on the second syllable (ba) and the R is sounded like a D. The name comes out Su Bah Du.

They started life in Japan but like most other large Japanese auto companies Subaru also builds some models here in the U.S.
