A gestational sac is the first sign on ultrasound that there is a pregnancy. At four weeks of pregnancy, we can see the sac within the endometrial cavity of the uterus, but we cannot yet see if there is a developing embryo inside that sac. At four weeks, the sac itself measures only 3 mm. Look at a ruler to see how small that really is! Considering how small that 3 mm really is, I am constantly amazed that we can visualize that on ultrasound.
"The gestational sac first appears at about 4 weeks gestational age, and grows at a rate of about 1 mm a day through the 9th week of pregnancy."

My friends wife went to the doctors when she was either 4 or 5 weeks along & they did an ultrasound. It just looks like a black blob though, you can't see the baby at all.

Implantation happens before you can even do blood work or urine tests for pregnancy. We're talking about something the size of a pin head. They have a hard enough time finding a 6 week embryo, its impossible to find one before then.

No even at a month they typically cant see anything. Until about 5-6 months they start to see the sack but there may or may not be anything inside of it yet.
