Mostly I think women who do this are frightened, and are often unaware of the help available to them.

That said, abortion is a terrible tragedy that should be avoided at all but deadly costs. It is the taking of the most innocent of lives in a most horrific manner. Except in the most extreme cases of medical distress the womb of a mother should not be invaded for any reason but to ensure the safety of the child within.

Those who abandon or God-forbid kill babies who are already born do face stiff penalties and should.

Every possible effort should be made to ensure that this does not happen. Families need to help each other and young women in distress need to be accepted and supported no matter how the baby was conceived. We as a society must come to value motherhood, and not pooh pooh it. Motherhood should be something to be proud of and looked forward to, not feared. If women were loved and cared for, and did not have to fear condemnation and rejection by those she loves many more children would be spared a horrible fate.

I am a mom of two beautiful babies.

I know what you mean. The stories about babies being dumped are just heartbreaking. In Kansas City just a few days ago, and woman who worked at McDonald's had her baby in the bathroom, and then tried to flush him down the toilet!!!! She tried several times, but luckily didn't succeed. Someone found her and they were able to revive the baby. She's now trying to say she didn't know she was pregnant. How many of you pregnant moms think that is even remotely possible? Some people shouldn't be allowed to procreate! There are just too many options out there for women who don't want the babies they are pregnant with, and I'm not talking about abortion either.

No, what mothers should get for the work we do (without payment or any kind of recognition) is supported.

If we had, say, Britain's "health visitors" (nurses who do home visits to families with new babies) or even the support payments such as the Netherlands makes to its parents, a great many more children would have happier home lives.

But instead we throw our money at the dying, through Social Security and Medicare, and wonder what in the world's going on with our kids.

Why are you comparing terminating a pregnancy to dumping a child. A "child" who is aborted (if you get it done soon enough, like you should) is a clump of blood cells. Dumping a child is leaving a child to either starve or die from disease. That is completely different. Some people have situations where it would be best to have an abortion. If you were honestly trying to prevent pregnancy (condom and Birth control) & you got pregnant anyways, and couldnt care for a child at that time, I think its okay to have an abortion. Abortion is not birth control though. I know I will get a million thumbs down for this, but it is a womans choice.

Abortions - I'm pro-choice, though my personal choice is pro-life

Dumping babies - I wonder if there is more we could do to recognize parents on the edge, educate them, and help them. I feel bad for women who feel so stuck that they resort to this - I wonder how bad life has to be for them to do something like this, as I can't imagine doing it myself. I'm a firm believer that this type of thing catches up with whoever did it, no matter what society does about it - they have to live with themselves the rest of their lives, after all. That said, I feel most of all for the babies being dumped, and hope and pray that they are healthy when found, and end up in loving homes where they thrive.

I think "Dolyn's" parents should have been "sterilized" before she was born. She seems to be taking up space in this world as well. People like her make me sick!!! It's a personal choice how many children people want to have, not something a government should decide, and if people having children make you sick, then go take a dive from a high cliff, that way with you not being here, there will be one extra space for a beautiful child to take it. You can even go to a deserted island and stay there until the day you die, that way you wont have to see the world get crowded.

Regarding your opinion, I agree with you 100%

Women like that ought to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. They knew what could happen by having sex and they did it anyways. All the millions of good people waiting years and years to adopt a baby and people are still killing their babies and neglecting the ones they have. Unfortunately our society protects these kinds of selfish irresponsible people and gives them the freedom to kill a baby just because you don't want it. You know, it's funny how it's not considered murder until the baby is born. There is no difference to me.

Why woman and young girls do it? Who the hell knows. I get upset just hearing about it. I do think that some women should just get their tubes tied, that way they won't go to jail for doing something really stupid that could have been avoidably in the first place.

and if they were raped and found themselves pregnant you would want them to continue on wih a pregnancy that can only cause them more emotional and possibly physical horror? I agree that dumping is horrid and I fully support the safe haven laws but abortion is a very personal decision. I do think dumping should be punished since there are so many other alternatives.

I agree! SELFISH DUMB PEOPLE
I live in KC MO and a 20 year old McDonald's employee had her baby in the bathroom at work and tried to flush the baby down the toilet 3 times. The tough little man is OK.
