Motorcycle accident causing a blood clot in his leg.

He had a leg infarction or ischemia. They didn't find it in time and by the time they found it the muscle had started to die and all the necrosis had led to a build up of infectious bacteria in his leg. They originally wanted to just remove the leg, but house wouldn't have it so they performed the surgery to remove the clot, thus releasing the bacteria into his system putting him in excrutiating pain. Then he asked to be put into a chemically induced coma so he could sleep through the worst of the pain. Stacy went against his wishes once he was out and the amputated some of the dead muscle to maximize the amount of tissue that would still function.

He had an infarction in his right thigh.
Similar to a clot that causes a stroke if it is in the brain, a heart attack if it is in the heart and an embolism if it is in the lung, an infarction in his leg blocked the flow of blood. House explains this in the "Pilot."

The chronic pain in his leg is the result of an infarction in one or more of the quadriceps muscles in his right thigh.

well what i get from it is that he was in a coma and they had to do something to his leg to get him out of it. i saw the episode that talked about it but i can't remember every last detail. sorry
