I recently sent in a letter to AP complaining about just this. AP articles will say that Iran is enriching Uranium, which the US suspects will be used to make nuclear weapons. So I asked, why did you stop mentioning that Iran's centrifuges are currently producing low-grade Uranium and that a nuclear weapon would require high-grade stuff? Of course they did not answer. They never do.
I do not doubt Iran is intent on achieving the nuclear status for the purposes admitted. I also don't doubt that they are interested in achieving a semi-nuclear status in order to posses an effective deterrent. That is, I think Iran knows that a secret nuclear armaments program could come at a very high price. My bet is that Tehran wants to get close enough to the bomb that it can plausibly deny a nuclear weapons program, but close enough that if a nuclear arms race started they would not be left behind.
I did not suspect Iran of such intention before the UN Security sanctions. US warmongering must have cleared whatever doubts the Persian high command might have had regarding the need for having nuclear weapon's capability. Just look at Iraq, the best insurance against a US invasion is having weapons. If you are disliked you will be accused of having them anyway and nobody will feel regret if it turns out you had none.
You also have to take into account where Iran stands in terms of delivery. Form what i've read, Iran is years away from possessing the to deliver a nuclear payload to Europe. And then you have to wonder what a third world country is going to do with a handful of nukes when its sworn enemy (Yisrael) has a couple hundred US made instant-holocausts ready to wipe Persia off of the pages of time.
If the US had been interested in securing the Non Proliferation regime they would have not bullied Iran, making it a matter of national pride for Ahdmadinejad to fight for Tehran's nuclear right. If the US were truly interested in protecting the NPT they would have not vetoed S.Africa's Security Council proposition to declare a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone in the Middle East, disarming Israel and providing aid for peaceful nuclear projects.

Why does the US media underplay these facts and overplay scaremongering? Well, it has to do with the basic conflicts of interests involved in capitalist news writing. 1)Media outlets know scaremongering sells. The US has a long tradition of having newspapers involved in the war effort, newspapers know it is very profitable to collaborate, ruinous to criticize.
2) Media outlets today are either run by or closely related to (advertising, investing, etc) corporations. It is no secret that corporations are closely related to one another (they invest in each others' debts, stocks, etc) and that they all share the profits made by the arms industry and the paramilitary industries in general during times of war.

There are two countries in the US, one that profits from war and one that sends its children to war. The media is run by the former. No wonder Americans not only ignore Iran's troubles, they also ignore their own government's stake in a variety of other swindles from Operation Paperclip to the billions it has secured for corporations by allowing them to sell nuclear secrets to dangerous allies.

Peace.

I guess Americans are told so by objective types of media, but not by the mainstream US media. The only reason I can figure out for this is, that war mongers don't want the public to be aware of the truth. So I guess the Russians, for example, are well aware of the truth-that Iran, like any country, is 10 years away from creating a nuclear bomb. As for Israelis-since I am not aware of any objective Israeli media institution-I guess they don't know the truth, or maybe they know Iran is 10 years away from creating that bomb, but they don't know that it's like any country...

That will not rally the people behind the war.Rallying the people behind a possible war is the goal.
Israel is pushing the US for years now to attack Iran and that information would rally people probably even against any armed intervention.
