check the starter or solenoid

It sounds like a starter type problem but you can check this by taking an old (disposable) screw driver and shorting the contact right on the starter/solenoid. If it cranks then the break might be somewhere else. (like the ignition switch under the dash)

Also, I've seen cars where the catalytic convertor was so plugged up it would stall and not crank until the exhaust gasses escaped over several minutes and then it would crank and start and then stall again. This is more common in smaller four and six cylinder engines.

Good Luck!

good advice here.
above.
chean the batteries terms, if done then clean the other ends.
the black to block cable and the red to starter cable.
then jump start it.
still no go.
then hot wire the solenoid coil , if no start starter is bad assuming battery is above 10v while starting.

ah just follow my:

locate the starter on the underside of the truck (follow the battery cable) and then tap it with a hammer. If the truck starts you probably will need a starter very soon.

First before you start throwing parts at it from shade-tree mechanic's tossing out their 0.2c opinion on what it is eliminate what it's not.

Buy a Chilton's or Haynes it will explain how to trouble shoot why it does not start ... could be many things ... the most common is the starter though it still needs to be tested etc.

Good luck

unless the altenator is locked up it is not the problem.. starter, neutral start switch, bad ground are possibilities

Starter, the alternator has nothing to do with your car starting.
