I watch when I can (Arsenal Rocks) my maternal grandmother came from England in the 50's. She watched me a lot as I was growing up, so I have some exposure to football.
America as a whole isn't that big on European Football, just American Football. As a consequence, it hard to follow what goes on during football season, unless you want to pay for the sports package on cable. My wife's not keen on the extra bill, so I catch what I can when it's on regular TV (rare).
In my experience, the average American male thinks your gay for liking football. I got ribbed a lot when I was younger (60's and 70's) for trying get people to play. There was just no interest.
It's a shame, football is a fast paced, strategic game. The average American, just see's a bunch of guys running around kicking a ball.
The number of big teams I'm aware of are twenty, starting from Arsenal Football Club to Wigan Athletic Football Club.
Talking about Arsenal, how do you think the Portsmouth game will do on Sept 2nd?

Like you said, if it's big teams like Chesea or Arsenal, and it's a big game, like a championship game, or if say, Chelsea is playing Arsenal, they'll show it on the local Fox Sports affiliate (cable).
As for regular league play, they usually don't show that. I do know of a few Brits over here who pay extra for their digital cable, and get all the games they want. Ironically enough, what they like to watch most is cricket, which they also pay for via digital cable.
Now, if it's a championship game between club teams in Europe, or something really big (like a few years ago with Liverpool against AC Milan) , they may show it on ESPN, but that's usually as far as it goes.

Fox Soccer Channel shows alot of games, especially on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. And not just the Big 4....I see Bolton, Sunderland, Birmingham, Fulham, Wigan, Newcastle, etc.. You can also see, from time to time, UEFA games, Champions League games, Serie A games, and Argentine Leagues. There is also Setenta Sports. They show alot of football. I get both on Verizon Fios Cable.

I think more people would watch if it were on televsion more. American football, baksetball, and baseball have exclusive televison contracts. Not to metion college football. Can soccer compete with the other sports? Maybe.

My dad watches soccer - I don't know who he watches or on what channel, but it seems like every time I go over to his house, he's wasting his 50" TV watching those lawn fairies running around not scoring.
