Awww first off - congrats on your upcoming baby :))) Babies are so fun!
It's a normal thing all babies are born with the need.... Check the link for lots of information - very, very informative! ;)
Thumb-sucking is a very common childhood habit, thought to occur in about 80 per cent of babies and infants. Parents usually notice it within the first three months of their child's life but ultrasound scans have observed babies in the womb sucking their thumbs from 28 weeks gestation.
The main problem associated with thumb-sucking is the risk of crooked or prominent teeth. However, this only becomes a problem if your child is still sucking her thumb when the adult teeth are coming through, usually at around 5 or 6 years old. Also, different types of thumb-sucking differ in the damage they can do to teeth. Children who rest their thumbs in their mouth are less likely to suffer problems than their forceful sucking peers.

It a natural reflex and a life sustsaining skill. It would be worrisome if your baby did not do this. Babies suck their thumbs in the womb to help them develop their jaw muscles. They need to do this in order to be able to suck milk either from you or the bottle. My son did that on my ultrasound also. He never ever sucked his thumb after he was born. In fact he had very little interest in pacifiers as well.

it's possible but not necessarily for certain... i have a lil bro who still sucks on his fingers... he's 2 and it's a very bad habit to the point where he sucks the skin off his fingers... if u dont want your children sucking their fingers break the habit early or use a supplement like a pacifier.. some parents are totally against them but new studies have found that babies who do use pacifers reduce the risk of SIDS because it keeps them from falling into a deep deep sleep

Not if you give him/her a pacifier. I had old ladies coming up to me telling me to get that pacifier out of my child's mouth. I would always respond by saying I'd rather have them sucking a pacifier than their thumb because I can take the pacifier away.
Congratulations!
Have a happy baby!

my daughter was extremely active in the womb also and we did catch her sucking her thumb in one ultrasound and her toe in the second ultrasound. she has never in 10 months taken a pacifier or sucked her thumb. just a piece of advice my aunt gave me (all her kids were thumb suckers) she said her kids wanted to suck but she didnt give them pacifiers so they sucked there thumbs, its easier to get rid of a pacifier but you cant take away there thumb!!

no it doesn't mean that i say my baby do that when i had my scan i gave her a dummy she never sucked her thumb
breast fed baby's tend to suck thumbs because most likely not always they don't get given a dummy
ive bottle fed my baby's and all had dummy's so no thumb sucking
but saying that my sis breast fed all hers and still no thumb suckers there either
i guess it just what they choose to do

Most babies suck their thumb in utero...not much else for them to do, I guess. I've had 4 kids and none of them sucked their thumbs. Whether or not they do, it's no big deal. Actually, if you breast feed, they get their sucking urge satisfied, so there is less chance of them being a thumbsucker.
