It depends on the species of fish really, as some fish are from more temperate areas than others ( eg danios are from cooler mountain rivers) and others are from warmer areas ( eg discus are from the warmer Amazon area). Unless you are keeping any of these fish then most fish have a certain amount of tolerance so a range of 74-79f should keep most fish happy.

A 50 gallon tank is pretty decent size. Make sure that your aquarium heater is big enough to heat that volume of water consistently.
Ideal temps should be anywhere from 76-80 degrees, depending on the species of fish you own. Also, make sure that if you have a variety of tropical fish, that one species can't tolerate the temperature range of the other (make sure they are compatible).
Be sure to use a secondary thermometer to check the accuracy of your water temps. Good luck!

Mine is at or below 80. I don't have the heater on during the summer because of the AC in the house, but it usually keeps the temperature moderated.
