All the dying and drowing people when the ship tears apart.

Let's be fair.... Yes, the love story is melodramatic; yes, Billy Zane's villain is written one-dimensional (all that's missing is a large handle-bar mustache and cape) and Frances Fischer's heroine's mother is drawn in broad strokes.

The story of the Titanic is bigger than the framework on which it is hung, which is essentially a love story about class. But that's not such a bad choice ... that is, when you have to choose something (and even though we wish it was less sappy) -- because, despite what people think, noone wants to sit through two hours of a detailed ship tour and then another hour of the ship sinking without dramatic context; that's what documentaries are for.

So ... to be fair to "Titanic": lame love story aside, James Cameron took painstaking steps to replicate the detail of the oppulence and excitement of a never-before experience in boat travel. The money spent on the movie is evident and the scene when it sinks is thorough and full -- there is no skimping there, you must admit! So whenever it pops up on cable, I am always drawn in to the drama of what actually went down when that big five-star gem of a hotel on the seas went underwater, taking with it the hopes and dreams of many of its working-class and less-than-well-to-do occupants (including children).

Watch it again -- think about how much work it must have taken to get that scene just right, including the intrepid stunt performers, the designers, prop coordinators, orchestrators, costumers....it's in the details. It's a huge film and the fact that the production value is often overlooked says that Cameron must have done something right: because even if you don't believe or care about the love-triangle, you do believe that thing is sinking and taking all those dreamers with it (even if that makes you roll your eyes and applaud...you cynical smartypants people, you...)

Well it was great at the time of it's release. Women love sappy love stories and now they love the fictional character Rose Dawson and the Titanic. I guess now that it has been so popular people wonder why it is or was so great. I personally think it was and still is a very powerful movie.

Everything.

Well, maybe not everything, but it has always been one of my favorites for several reasons. I like the use of the love story between the main characters in connection with actual historic events. The score is great, although I haven't been able to listen to My Heart Will Go On in a long time, too many plays on the radio. It has some of my favorite actors in it, Kate Winslet, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Victor Garber. The special effects were really good back in 97, and still look great now. And, I remember going to see it with a bunch of my friends back when I was 13. I haven't seen some of them in many years, but that movie always reminds me of them. Good times.

Because everyone loves to watch people screaming and dying, trying to fight for their lives during some disaster. Best part was when the ship was going down and all the people slide down the decks into the ocean ... ouch, splinters.

The special effects (once they finally start the boat sinking) and the song Celine Dion sings. Other than that, nothing. It was way too long and the plot got pretty thin.

One point I have to make to all the girls out there who liked that movie. If the stupid girl would have stayed in the life boat then Jack would have survived!..HE would have been on top of whatever it was they were clinging to in the water and she would have been in a life boat. Both would have survived.

Two movies in one:
* a first part so so love story
* a second part so so action movie (run for your lives).

It was just Leo's face/performance who make it a "so great".

The acting, the scenery, the costumes, everything really.
If you didn't like the 1999 version, try the old black and white one.
