You make a valid point with regard to DOING, though FUN isn't strictly the why; in the sense of this category, including one or more friends.
One thing I have learned in my time, and I can relate it to the government,,,Often anything done by Committee; isn't always a productive experience. Obviously having someone help is sometimes a neccesity; such as lifting a double 2 x 10 x 16ft, double ledger into place.
DIY on its most base level wasn't taken up as jobs people wanted to do. Most often they HAD no options. In todays world DIY is often thought to save $$$; though that isn't always the case. DIY is also an affirmation that WE CAN,,,hopefully; and if so; why then hire out a job. It's like a badge of honor to some; or a Gold star next to a name on a task chart.
I suspect that DIY Parties are not always the best situations. I can anaolgize that as it has happened so often. I want my entire house painted. I "Invite" help stating they will be well fed, have drinks available; and can quit when they choose. During the process I notice some rooms are empty, paint is drying on brushes and rollers, drop cloths are scattered and paint is on the floor. it seems many are at the Buffet table; some are drinking out by the pool; and a bit later people are telling me, "OMG I didn't realize the time; I gotta get home."
Hardly an experience that was FUN or helpful to me.

my friend keeps telling me I'm not independant enough, just because I like to do things with a friend rather than alone. I think I'm just social.

friends are great when you have them, but when nobody is available, things must be handled!
