i know how to distribute but if i do that i get 3x on both sides and i dont know how to do it if you have the same variable on both sides, any help? i need the work 2

3(x+4)=3x-2
3x-12=3x-2
0=10
Obviously this is not an equality even though it says it is.
Maybe a misprint, -2 should be -12.

I think that there's something wrong with this equation. Could you have copied the question wrong?

The solution comes out 3x + 14 = 3x, which, of course, doesn't make any sense since, if you reduce it further, comes out 14 = 0. I admit that I've forgotten a lot of my math but I'm pretty sure that 14 is larger than zero.

When you find, as you did, 3x + 12 = 3x -2, you must have enough confidence to claim, "The given relation is not an equality, therefore cannot be solved."
