Buy anything that they can push. At this age they are learning how to walk, and interest in toys is minimal, since they are mostly learning to interact with people. You can get this little Elmo and Cookie Monster Vacuum that I got my daughter. Around $10 at Wal-Mart... or a sit-n-ride kind of toy. Also at Wal-Mart around $10.

when my son turned 1 a year ago, i wanted him to get some shoes. they learn to walk around 1 y/o, so shoes would be nice to get for them. make sure you ask the size from the mom. most kids are a size 6 or 7 around 1 y/o, depending on girl or boy. i don't recommend clothes b/c lots of people give clothes, so you'll only add to that. daipers is another good one. parents spend so much $$$ on daipers, it's not even funny. i know they would appreciate greatly if they got some as gifts. when in doubt though, get a gift card to walmart or target. they can always get stuff they need but didn't get. have fun shopping!

I have found that all the young ones I have to buy gifts for love books. There are also a lot of great toys that are offered by a brand called Baby Einstein that helps with playtime and development. You can find those toys pretty much anywhere(i.e. target ,walmart, babies r us) and they are pretty inexpensive ($10-40). Honestly, at that age they are more interested in the box and wrapping paper that the toy comes in then the actual toy.

I used to always give a small red wagon that was just right sized to haul toys and would hold 2 babies.
Now I switched to a check for the savings account since the babies get more toys than they can use before they outgrow them.
US Savings bonds make a nice gift.

My daughter just turned one and she got some of the big legos, one of the popping things that you push on the floor and it has little balls in it that pop up and down, a little piano thing (like a xylophone). You could find out what kind of sippy cups he/she uses and buy some of those or worse comes to worse just get a gift card and then the parents can get the child what ever he or she needs

I would say anything Elmo, you can never go wrong with Elmo for a one year old.
Also Vtech makes a lot of educational toys, just make sure that if you buy Vtech, that the item that you buy is for children in the age range of the child you are buying for.

I definatly would NOT get shoes or clothes unless you plan on taking the baby with you so she/he can try them on.

One of my sons turned 1 earlier this month. The best part of a birthday present for him was unwrapping them. Use gift wrap that the guest of honor can tear off & a ribbon that is loose enough for them to pull off (curled ribbons are best) Also, before you wrap the gift, fully remove the toy from the package so that it can be played with right away.

Boys like - little cars, trucks, trains
Gilrs like - dress up stuff, little ponies or animals that are easy to hold
Both like - balls, chalk for coloring on the sidewalk, stacking cups, wooden puzzles & THE GLOWWORM big hit with al 1 yr olds I've ever met!

I have 22 nieces and nephews and for their birthday's I get one outfit and 1 toy. The outfits are bought for the upcoming season and 1 size bigger then they were because they can grow into it. My friends and sisters have been thankful for this. The toy for a one year old can be anything that helps with motor skills. It really works and you can do this with a low income.

The best gift is something like a bond to put back for college. it is the gift that keeps giving.
