i was in the process of donating my eggs... i was matched with a couple that was thrilled to find someone who matched their criteria, i was sent in for my final blood work before i started the procedure and i tested posotive for the STD HTLV1 i am a virgin and of course this sent my entire family and boyfriend into a whirlwind! i have been living in hell for 2 weeks waiting for the "confermation test" it finally came back NEGATIVE! my issue is that i now cannot donate eggs because of the initial results due to FDA regulations...i basically got screwed out of 10 grand by someone elses mistake, not to mention the poor couple who had to get on the same cycle as me and have already been through more then i can imagine with the fact they cannot conceive! what can i do? what are your thoughts? im just angry on so many levels!

OHHHHH and i forgot to add HTLV can only be passed to a child through breast feeding...so even if i did have the disease WHICH I DON'T it wouldn"t even effect the eggs!

Yes... yet another example of well meaning government regulations having the effect of screwing people...
And for all of you out there bitching about this woman taking money for her eggs... who cares... it's her body, she has the right to sell it if she so chooses... imagine how many more kidneys we'd have avaliable to people who are dying from kidney disease if people were allowed to legally sell their kidneys to willing buyers! Imagine how much more blood the Red Cross would collect if they gave people a few bucks when they gave their blood... you should get paid if you want! I wouldn't give you my car out of altruism, why should I be compelled by charity to give you my bone marrow, or kidney, or sperm, or any other body part! If you want to pay me for my car, that's a different story altogether though...
Like it or not, limiting people to donations will never allow the supply to meet the demand... there are never going to be enough people who are willing to give up one of their kidneys out of love... espically for someone they never met! Jesus may have loved all of us enough to die on a cross... but most of us aren't this altruistic!

Ah, bureaucracy - closest thing to Hades on Earth we'll ever conceive - pardon the pun. It would seem that a quick appeal to an administrative law judge would be in order - and if you stand to make ten grand through the donation, you darn well can afford a lawyer!
Typical of so many well-meaning laws and regulations, this one was hastily put in place without any thought given to the most important law of all - the Law Of Unintended Consequences. Such situations should be judged on an individual basis using simple, clear guidelines and a good dose of common sense. Of course, common sense to a bureaucrat is like hemlock to a Socrates - pure poison!
Good luck with the appeal...

It may not have been anyone's mistake. Some tests register interferrants as positive results. It could have been something you ate or something peculiar to your body chemistry. This is why confirmation tests are done on positive screen hits. It sucks that the FDA disqualified you, I'm sorry for that.

Why be mad at the FDA? You should be upset at the people doing the tests. All the FDA is doing with that regulation is fighting STDs. Last time I checked that was a good thing.

Clearly the intent is to prevent your donation if you have the virus, not if you have ever been tested in error.
Clearly you need to call the FDA and keep asking for the person's supervisor until you get to somebody who can fix the problem.

Unfortunately, the FDA is not there to protect you, they are not there FOR you in any way. They are there to sell drug manufacturing rights, etc...to the highest bidder. They have what appears to be an idiotic regulation which is a problem for you and the couple you were donating to. What do they care?
More unfortunately, I do not think that there is anything that you can do about it.

I'm sure there's something you can do, if it's a false positive then there's no reason for you not to be able to do it. FDA sucks but, without them we would be literally eating animal sh*t in our food along with other things. Anyways, damn you get 10 g's for donating your eggs? where's the dry ice and turkey baster? aw damnit i just remembered I have testicles instead, I wonder if they'll notice the difference....

Well,if you tested positive for std, then i would imagine the FDA is doing their job very well by catching it and not proceeding with your eggs. That would be scary to get a donated egg with a virus!!!
