Because Red Sox fans are ignorant.

If the entire season was based on a Yankee - Red Sox season its obvious the Yankees would be in the lead 2006 style.

After reading every ones responses I realized one thing. The question is completely wrong and no offense. The first error is the Red Sox aren't the best team in baseball at all. To hit up that point I will lay it down for you. The best team in baseball right now are out west in Anaheim. The Angels are the team to be right now period no matter what people might say. Lackey, Escobar and Weaver are pitching like 3 aces right now while Saunders has been on his game except his last one. They have a top 5 closer in K Rod and then there is their NL style play. They might not be close to hitting as many homers as the Yanks or Sox but they are a top 5 in Runs scored and Top 10 in runs against. They are .5 games back of the Red Sox and they lost colon for the year. Anderson has been hurt all year, Figgins missed then entire Sea series and they still swept them and then there is OC and Mathews who might not be worth 55 million but for all the horrible off season signings he is one of the best as of now.
Anyone who doesn't think this is true look at the numbers please. And for the reason the Sox were swept by the Yankees its the same reason Colo did it to the Yanks before. This is baseball and things happen. Enjoy!!

As a Red Sox fan, I am not surprised. This is their history, as everyone knows. I will always be a Red Sox fan, but this is why I can't stand them at times. They go to New York with an 8 game lead. A chance to put the Yankees in a bigger hole going into the last month of the season, and of course, can't win 1 game. Now, they let the Yankees right back in the race and at the same time, allow the typical arrogant Yankee fans to do what they do best. I'm likely to stay away from this site for a while, simply because I'm in no mood to listen to all the Yankee fan nonsence. I have the same problem when Red Sox fans do the same, but it's all just ridiculous, because, after all, it's just a god damn game. The fans take it way too far. Let's see what happens between now and the rest of the season, but I fear we could be looking at another famous Red Sox late season collapse. Am I surprised by the sweep? No, of course not. But there's still 1 more series left, and that's at Fenway. Hopefully by then, the roles will be reversed and the Red Sox will still win the division, but I know their history and what happened in Yankee Stadium is really no less surprising then the collapse of the Milwaukee Brewers. I would congratulate the Yankees for doing what needed to be done. They stepped it up, while the good old Sox choked. But I have a hard time congratulating Yankee fans because of the typical attitude of Yankee fans, and New Yorkers in general.

Threads like this just make me shake my head. How hard is it to understand that in a 162-game schedule, sweeps at the hands of both superior and inferior opponents are going to happen.

In 2001, the Seattle Mariners won 116 games, but were swept by the Oakland A's in a three-game series. Did that mean Oakland was better? No. The next year, the Yankees won over 100 games, but were swept in a series by Seattle. Did that mean Seattle is better? No.

I'm hoping that you're a kid, because there's no reason an adult baseball fan shouldn't understand enough about the game not to ask this question.

The Red Sox aren't the best team in baseball, but they can be considered one of the best. A team can't win every game, or every series. Sometimes when you're not on top of your game, the other team usually is. I guess the Sox weren't on top of their game, but the Yankees were. But you know what? It's okay, 'cause the season isn't over yet

any team can be swept at any time.the angels just swept the mariners to open up a 5 game lead in the west and now the mariners are tied with the yankees for the wild card spot.
boston still leads the yankees and as of now are 2 games better than the angels for the best record in the AL. but there is still a long ways to go so anything can happen.

A Good Start Early in the Season and they never let their Guard down throughout as for the Yankees They know they can't win the AL East so the Wild Card is the Only Alternative for them to get in the Playoffs.

Yankees always step it up when they play the Sox and they are in NY....wait to flap your gums until the series at Fenway is over. Oh by the way...the Red Sox are still leading the division!

Here is my explanation - the Red Sox are not - and never will be - the best team in baseball. At least not as long as the NY Yankee frachise exists. There you have it.

Well according to your factoid that makes The White Sox and Rockies better then the Yankees because they both sweet the yanks early in the season as did the red sox. We play better in march-June you play better July-Sept its been proven. Now please stop twisting facts unless you want them twisted back.
