I babysit for an 8 month old little boy. For some reason over the past coupls of weeks he has been really constipated. The parents are fantastic and between them and me, we have tried everything under the sun to help him out. Over the counter meds, fruits, juices, veggies...you name it. What else can be done?

You should check with your doctor but my daughters peditriction recommend putting a small about of benefiber in her bottle once a day. My daugther had SO many problems with constipation and this has done wonders for her! We were giving her suppositories one a week and we haven't done any in about a month! We also mix (gerber) prunes in with her diet like once a week.

Our peditriction said this is a very common age for constipation

Prune juice will work. Is he on formula or what? Something in his diet isn't right if he's doing this. E-mail me and I'll see if I can figure out what's going on. None of my kids EVER had a problem. If this continues - he should be seen by the dr.

This is going to sound very strange. I had this problem with my baby. The poor thing would scream and cry everytime she had to go poo poo. The doctor said to give her sugar water. 1 part sugar, 2 parts water. I tried it, and it worked!

A little bit of tummy massage, cooled boiled water. Might just work.

If you have tried all that I suggest the parents take him to the doctor.

prunes and more fluids haven't worked? Then the child needs to see a doctor.

Is he being fed too much rice? What's he eating? That can make him constipated. If it doesn't improve, take him to his pediatrician.

Reduce the fat in his diet. This happened to a baby when I was working in daycare. Although this happened when her mother put her on whole milk. The minute she switched to 2% she was fine. Lower the fats in his diet and see if that works.

Water, prunes, apples....if all else fails they have enema kits you can buy at the store...if it is making him that uncomfortable then it is worth it.

Good luck!
