Would they correct you or scold you if you were being naughty? Would they tell your parents or guardian? Did you roam the area you grew up in?

Knew everyone on our street and pretty much on the streets around us. We had free roam, at least I thought we did, until the day I went a little too far and came home to find my dad waiting for me in the driveway...and I automatically knew what was coming! But to get back to your question, it seemed like we were all extended family on our street. The adults all watched over the kids, and yes, they felt free to scold or correct us when necessary. Don't know if they actually told my parents, but the fear was there so I wouldn't repeat whatever the mistake was. The best part was always knowing that you could count on these people to help if we were hurt or there was any kind of emergency.....we'd just go to the nearest house and someone would always be there to help. Not so much anymore....these days so many people work, neighbors don't seem to really know each other as well, and there are some that you wouldn't want your kids to go near no matter what.

I knew all the neighbours by name in a four street radius from my home. That was 120 of them, and I know this because I was also their paper girl...but I did know most of them by name long before I started delivering papers.

The neighbours ALWAYS kept an eye on ALL THE KIDS...you betcha we were scolded by whoever was closest! The parents only got "told" when what was done was especially bad. (But since I was a little angel none of that concerned me.)

And as to roaming...I had the whole of the area in a ten mile radius from my house (approximate--but later measuring made it about that) minutely explored and filed away in my copious mental curiosity files....I'm not exaggerating on this!

I knew everyone on my street, but that was about it. I lived on a dead-end that I was free to roam as long as my parents knew I was out of the house, but beyond that I had to ask permission. Over the past year, almost all of the houses on my block have been sold to new families with small children, and I don't know any of them.

yes, i was fortunate to grow up in a quiet neighborhood in a small town, and i knew all my neighbors, and often played around the neighborhood. where i live now, i don't think i've ever even talked to them before, aside from a smile and wave when we happen to be outside at the same time.

I actually didn't know too many of my neighbors when i was growing up...

I was never repremanded by anyone in my neighborhood because i was i guess considered a "quiet good girl", LOL. The neighbors praised me and would tell my mother i was such a good kid.

No but they knew mine and yes if you were doing something your parents would not approve of you bet, and the next time they seen your parents they would be sure to mention it. So therefore we always thought about what we were doing. Back then your parents addressed the issue.

Yes we did. Everybody knew everybody and if you did something wrong, your mom would know.

I could roam all over the place without any fear. Those were good times.
