I have a 1990 auto. camaro with a new 355(it was bored 30 over). The new engine has about 5k miles on it. The car is now burning about 1qt of oil a week. It seems like over time its just gotten worse. It does blow smoke out of the exhaust but not a whole lot. I had one of my friends tell me what color the smoke is when I hit the gas and he said a little of blue/black/and white but mostly black. But I always get different responses when I ask someone, but most the time they will say black or blue. Every time I've looked at the exhaust its black, and occasionally a little blue. I am not loosing any coolant, at least not according to my overflow resivoir. I recenly put a new intake manifold, and carb on it and didn't know exactly what I was doing but didn't have a choice(don't have the $ for mechanic), so for about 2 weeks my engine would get close to 230 because it was lean, thats fix now and running at 205. How do i know if I blew a head gasket? could my unplugged pcv valve be the prob?

Could it be something as simple as a loose valve cover/bad seal? any advice appreciated.

bored 30 over.
what does unplugged mean? if the breathers are pluged up you will have a nasty mess. Make sure PCV system is back in place and not blocked.

ok:
the engine.
did you bore it with distortion plates in place to simulate the head torque. other wise many thin wall chev blocks distort and then burn oil like crazy.
on right rear of bock , does stamping say made in Mexico?
if yes they are crap. (voids in the cylinders common)
did you get a full valve job with new valve guides and seals.?
did you get new rings with the pistions or are they used.

did you break in the engine at low speeds? so the rings would seat to the crosshatch pattern of the boring and honing.?

Who built this engine, does it have a warrantee?

its Valve seals , or Oil control rings not seated.
if car smokes like mad on Deaccelaration then it is seals.

Test, hot engine, going down hill , briskly, cut trottle in 2nd gear, let engine do the braking, NOW look at tail pipe.
see white smoke , well that is the intake valve seals leaking to beat the band. ( you are making max vacuum at the valve)
this vacuum will suck oil down the valve stem. (bad seals)

that is it for now.

This is a serious problem and you will not get out of this cheap.

If it is a head gasket the oil will get into the water and when it is hot it will foam. Look for foam in the radiator and the radiator overflow.

If I where to take an educated guess I would say you need to pull the engine and have it rebuild by someone who knows how to build an engine. the compression check is a good way to determine alot about an engine. I agree with that for sure.

If the oil was leaking out 1qt a week it would be obvious where it was coming from and you would see and smell the burning oil (white smoke from under hood).

Good luck.

I would have a compression check ran on the engine. If you have a cylinder that is reading low squirt some oil into the cylinder and take another reading. If the pressure goes up, then you have a ring problem, they may not have seated, or if the low compresson remains, then you may have a problem with a valve guide seal.

With about 5K, it might not be a bad idea to check the torque on the heads and retighten them.

good luck.

fantastically undesirable...you in all hazard have heavily worn piston earrings and the oil is blowing previous them in the process the compression stroke and burning off. this is sluggish sufficient which you won't have extensive plumes of smoke jointly as making use of...yet sufficient the place a small quantity of grey or white smoke could be popping out of the exhaust jointly as making use of. Assuming the difficulty replace into crowned off with 4-5 quarts on the final oil replace, burning a quart each and every a million,000-or-so miles is a excessive loss value. not catastrophic...yet very excessive. Realistically, in case you you will opt for to characteristic a quart each and every a million,000 miles, your motor vehicle will final for a pair of extra years. (next time you have the oil replaced, examine the dipstick in the present day to make useful that the mechanic has stuffed the oil to the suited point.) As for the oil gentle not drawing near...IF the motor vehicle certainly had in simple terms one quart left in it...it could have come on....or a minimal of flickered in the time of stressful braking or quickly turns. maximum probable the plug to the oil sensor is disconnected or broken off. this is rather undemanding to knock this situation unfastened while working decrease than the motor vehicle. it may even be that the sensor plug that screws into the oil pan is defective. A not-very-elementary journey...yet a miles less high priced and undemanding fix. lastly, working your motor vehicle to the low gasoline gentle has not something to do with the engine oil. It being on would not influence oil intake in any way.

my guess is the carb is way to rich and possible intake manifold gasket problem....
