Depends on how bad it is. If it's really crusted with baked on food, soak it, scour it out with a SOS pad, then reseason it.

If it's lightly soiled, wipe it out with a paper towel, or pour in some salt and scour it with a paper towel.

Most people NEVER really clean a cast iron skillet. You mainly wipe it out with a paper towel or cloth. Once you get it 'seasoned' you never want water on it again.

Clean it as soon as you are finished cooking in hot water and scrub with a straw bristle brush or a nylon bristle brush. If you must, use mild dish soap, rinse in hot water and then dry on the burner. When it is dry, use a paper towel to rub a little SHORTENING, not oil, on the inside surface. If it is rusty, you can use a steel wool soapy pad to clean it and then dry and rub with shortening and leave over medium heat for about 5 minutes. If you don't use it very often, put it in the box in a dry place or wrap with newspaper and leave in dry place. If you use it at least once a week, store it in your oven when you aren't using the oven.

The best method i have found is to wash it with waer ony after each use.NO SOAP. Then apply cooking oil or grease to the skillet before storing. I have noticed soap will cause food to stick.

I tend to use salt and a scrub brush. Sometimes I just use soap and water and dry it out immediately so it doesn't rust. good luck getting it clean!
