I would intervene, and with authority. I'm a school district psychologist and under those circumstances I would be legally obligated and legally empowered to intervene. I have the same authority and obligations as a Child Protective Services Officer. I would do what I have to do,namely detain her while awaiting the police, who would make a decision about passing the matter along to CPS. They would I.D. her, obtain her current address and CPS would arrive within 40 minutes or so. The cops might stay with her or they might trust her to wait at home, but she would at the least spend the afternoon talking to a CPS team. That's child abuse - possibly, depends on their finding - in itself, but the real issue is if that's what she's capable of in public, try to imagine what might be taking place behind closed doors. The child needs a through examination. MH and physical.

It's sure no laughing matter, but it's quite disturbing for any parent or a guardian, to strike a child with a handbag or some other object out in public. It makes us wonder what kind of people they really are, maybe some of them have a history of child abuse.

I'd be upset...I know it's their child & people think we should mind our own business but if there's severe harm being done to the child then I would definitely intervene or call security if it's at a public shopping mall, etc.

No child should ever be beaten. I would stop the woman in a heartbeat. I would gladly get between her and her child to prevent such abuse, even if that meant I'd be the one to go to jail.

children should not be hit with foreign objects like a pocketbook. i'm fine with a swat on the butt by hand but that's it.

I would be upset. There is never an excuse to beat a child. Punishment is one thing beating is another.

i would be sad for the child =[
i know its hard to deal with kids, especially if shes a single mom, the child is so young you can only imagine how traumatizing it is when someone who is supposed to love them is hitting them. when i was a child, my dad used to whip me with belts, and believe me i used to- and still do suffer from depression and self esteem issues ( i know everyone does but it really does hurt as a child growing up)i dont believe anything could justify hitting a child.

I would be upset, pay attention to which car she got in, take down the type and license plate number, and report her to the proper authorities.
