I had a cat when I had both of my babies. We never had any problems. You should not clean the cat's litter box when you are pregnant. And like with any animal, you shouldn't leave a young baby unsupervised with the cat. But as long as your baby isn't allergic to cats then there is no reason to get rid of a cat that you already have. And I think it is good for children to grow up with pets. If you have an unusually mean cat, then you might think about finding a new home for the cat, but if not then let your baby enjoy the kitty. Just watch them and as the baby gets older make sure he/she doesn't hurt the cat which might cause the cat to scratch the baby.

Nothing wrong with it. Cats usually avoid babies after sniffing them once or twice. They make noise. Having pets is also linked to less likelihood of developing allergies, although I don't know how that works.

The exception is animals that become aggressive after the baby arrives. This is more of a dog thing than a cat thing, but some cats do become aggressive.

I also do not think it's wise to get a new pet when you are TTC or expecting. You won't be giving the pet the attention it deserves especially since most people get young pets.

I have three cats. I got them before I began to have kids. I now have a 3 year old and a 9 month old. The cats have been fine through both pregnancies and with both of the kids. They really know just to avoid the baby. They don't try to smother the baby or anything, that is just old wives tale junk. Now that the eldest is 3 he loves the cats and they love him. The will sleep at the foot of his bed at night and enjoy the extra hand that pets them and loves them.

I have a 6 year old cat and I haven't had any problems. My daughter is 5 1/2 months old now and she's just starting to discover the cat. She wants to pet him and grab him but he's afraid of her. He comes around and sniffs her head every once in a while but as soon as she reaches for him, he runs away....oh well. The most important and most difficult thing to do is to make sure to give your cat attention too. If they are reassured that you haven't forgotten about them, they won't get jealous. I've caught him in her crib a couple of times but never when she was in it. I don't see him being a problem with her at all. I just can't wait until she's old enough to chase him around the house!

i don't think kittens are such a good idea until after the baby is grown abit.. they are curious little creatures and really can't help themselves..

I also have a dog, she's a great dane (huge dog!) and loovees babies.. she's great with the children. and her and the cat are good friends :)

It's awesome. Well, I know you want us to assuage your concerns and let me assure you , cats want nothing to do with a new baby. Babies move unpredictable, and unpredictable movements are the known enemy of cats!

Certainly don't let the cat in the nursery while the baby sleeps. But do let the baby touch the kitty. It will DELIGHT her. One of my daughter's first words was kitty. Another was meow.

Having pets is a wonderful thing for children. It teaches them about respect for all living things.
