It started back when it was common for animals to dig up graves that were too shallow.

This has been asked and answered many times. Originally 6 feet deep was determined to deter most scavengers from digging to eat the body. This tradition has carried on until now.

I don't fancy the things about things standing up from the grave. Because last Tuesday I took flowers to my mother's grave. I always do that on my birthday, instead of remembering her death I go there on special days. Well I tell you I was standing there praying and reflecting and all of a sudden, I had this weired thought that my mum's hand was going to poke up thought the ground it felled real. I quickly finish what i was saying and ran off. That never happened to me before and I hope it doesn't happen to me again.

The law in MOST states is that there has to be AT LEAST 18 inches of dirt above the coffin/vault. Having dug many graves, not one was 6 feet deep because I could stand in the bottom (while leveling it out) and still pull myself out (I'm 5'6")

Someone crazy could put them out of their graves if they weren't buried deep. Or a physical disaster could do the same. Or it harms the envirmonment if they are not buried deep enough

Like what the others have said, so scavengers don't get them. Again, I'm sorry to hear about your brother, and That @$$ needs to grow up with their comment about the whole "standing up thing."
God Bless, and don't worry about losers like that.

Its cause most people are about 6 feet tall or less and if they are buried that deep and suddenly stand up we won't be able to see them and get all kinds of scared.
