The US has become so captive to China as a result of the US's massive foreign debt ,that if the US pushes China to hard on these quality issues ,China could merely dump it's US dollar holdings which all experts agree would plunge the US (and others) into a profound economic depression.
The US and Chinese economies are so massively dependant that neither parties can puch the other to far and hard .
The Chinese have the upper hand as they have a lot less to loose in an economic meltdown than does the US.
The Us must face the fact that they are a declining EMPIRE and China and India will soon be the dominany world powers like it or not as they have over one third of the world's population.

China is a feudal system moving rapidly into the 21st century. They cannot control what goes into their products and they only care to to the extent it hurts their profits. Weren't they communist just last week? Why are they all of a sudden our favorite country? Because we owe them billions that we have borrowed to finance this war. I try not to buy chinese products. If you make a statement like this, you have not looked at what is made in China. The stuff that isn't has Chinese stuff in it. Buy some bread without chinese wheat gluten (Yeah, you know that stuff that killed our dogs?)
Its not that our companies are any better. Do you know the crap they put in our food?
The point of this rant is that we have to take personal responsibility for what we purchase and consume. We have come to expect the government to protect us and we really cannot.

US corporations have billions invested in China. The cheap, dependable labor supply and poor working conditions save money and increase profits. The corporate lobby will fight strenuously to keep importing from China and will oppose any laws or regulations that try to reduce those imports.

Do you realize just how much stuff we get from China? If we barred their products wholesale, imagine your local Wal-Mart, Target, and most of the Mall empty, and the few shops selling US products charging you out the @ss. That's what would happen.

Hey, go talk to Walmart. Chinese products are their claim to fame. And if you're gonna pay a nickel for a chocolate bar, you've gotta expect to get a couple of maggots in with your peanuts.

Unfortunately people in america want their cheap plastic crap, and cheap food.
Why should China produce safer items when we continue to give them money for the unsafe ones??
The companies that import the items are equally to blame for not being careful with their quality control.

There a very few products consumed in America that are made in America nowadays. The Chinese,to a large degree, have us over a barrel.
We can't just stop importing from them, and they know it.

What's the point? If people don't want Chineese made products then people won't buy Chineese made products...
The market works way faster, more efficiently than Government regulations, trade restrictions, and command and control... all without limiting our choices.
People are intelligent enought to make their own decisions, we do not need the government to make decisions like this for us... personally I don't think there is much risk of getting sick from a Chineese made product, so I will not be activly avoiding Chineese products... but if you don't want Chineese products, then by all means avoid them... all (or almost all) products say their country of origin on them...
We need to stop scaring ourselves to death over miniscule risks... you took a much greater risk getting up this morning than you would by eating a chocolate bar made in China... give me a break!
And I'm sick of all this China bashing right now... apperently very few people know a thing about economics... so I'll explain it agin...
You all seem to think this imbalance of trade with China is a bad thing... but it isn't. International trade isn't really any different than domestic trade... it only becomes different in peoples minds.
Think about it... there is a huge imbalance of trade between New Jersey and Nebraska... with many more goods flowing from Nebraska into New Jersey, but that doesn't make New Jersey poor and Nebraska rich...
Plus, by having good trade relations with places like China it reduces the risk of military conflict. Remember the wise words of the 19th century Frenchman, Frederic Bastiat, "When goods cannot cross borders, armies will."
If you need to, think about it a different way... during a war, a common tactic against an enemy is to blockade or embargo the enemy, preventing them from recieving trade goods from outside nations... the protectionism that you're advocating, vis a vis cutting off trade with China, is the same thing only imposed on ourselves! Dose that make any sense?!?!
Not to mention, why do you think China has us in a worse position than we have China? We are the buyers... their job as suppliers is to keep us happy, otherwise we will buy our goods from someone else! They may be our main supplier, but we can go elsewhere to get our goods, they must sell to us to maintain their economy... we are the ones that have China over a barrel! And if you don't think this effects China more than it effects the USA, think about the policies China has take reciently to stop the tainted food products, toys, etc., from reaching America... China executed their former head of the national food and drug safety, Zheng Xiaoyu, over this situation! Think this isn't important to the Chineese? The Chineese may have been a little harsh, but uncaring they are not!
And everybody seems to think that buying stuff cheap is a bad thing... but why is that... if you buy a toy for $1 rather than $5 that means you have $4 more to spend on other stuff... its better for you, better for the economy... better for everybody. If cheap products are such a problem, then why is everybody bitching about gasoline being at $3 a gallon! CHEAPER IS BETTER! And by outsourcing these jobs to China, and other places we are creating more, better paying jobs for Americans! Because people can save more money on products made in china they spend more, and employ more people, many of them right here in AMERICA!
By the way, all this bullshit about China distroying the US economy by liquidating our debt is total bull... think about it...
US Treasury bills and notes do not have a call option... they can't simply ask for the US to pay out what we owe them... what they could do is to sell the bonds on the market for less than market value... but this does us no harm, and does the Chineese great harm... they'd be out TRILLIONS of dollars.
Think about it... you could buy corporate bonds in, say Ford Motor Company... lets say you buy them for $5 a piece... and then to spite the company you sell them for less than market value... lets say for $1 a piece... then you're out $4 a piece, and Ford looses nothing, because they already borrowed $5 a piece from you!...
If the Chineese were to attempt this plan the simple fact is that the Fed Reserve would snap up the bonds for cheap, then turn around and sell them on the market for market value and turn a tidy profit in the exchange!
Anyway... why would China choose any sort of policy against the USA? If they did, they would be killing the proverbial goose that laid the golden egg... trade with the USA has been the number one factor in the growth of the Chineese economy over the last 20 years! If they were somehow to be able to distroy our economy, how long do you think it would take before the Chineese economy crashed... the time could be measured in minutes! You can't sell products to nobody!
