It basically means that the bed and the sitting room are one room! the rest (kitchens etc) can vary from shared, to built in to the room..or even seperate private kitchens bathrooms etc but if it states bedsit it means it doesnt have its own seperate bedroom.

I used to live in bedsits in Huddersfield and Manchester. They both contained some rather battered furniture, a small oven and fridge and a little kitchen area with wash-up sink, also hand basin. Toilet and bathroom were shared with other tennants. The houses were old with sash windows and could be very cold. Huddersfield was very lonely because everyone was unsociable: I left invitations to share drink, chat, coffee and biscuits and no-one answered.
Manchester was much nicer in that I had proper neighbours in the other tennants. Unfortunately I got on the wrong side of some local yobs owing to working at Manchester Magistrates as a cleaner. Currently I'm in a shared house so I have a bit of garden to play with and another tennant to talk to in an open house situation because we share kitchen and lounge and negotiate paying bills and suchlike. I prefer my current situation because I have more control over my living environment and I am in no danger of becoming isolated. This is a proper home: I did my best to smarten up the bedsits but they were both quite run down and tatty in comparison. My current landlord is a good man who takes a real interest in his tennants and in keeping the property in good order and continually improving it.
I was told by my landlord in Manchester that the government (which since became a Labour government...) was wanting to do away with bedsits as they posed more fire risks and suchlike: eg, having an oven in a room with carpets and curtains, lack of proper ventilation and so on.

A bedsit is one room where you sleep and cook. You usually have a small kitchen and bed as well as an area to watch TV. you have to share other facilities like bathroom and kitchen.

Bedroom & Sitting room in one small area. Can have a kitchen area and a wash basin but seldom a toilet. Think a miniature studio flat without social amenities. Ranks pretty low on the rented accommodation scale.
