hi just a solution, but the most commen cause of algae build up is sun light.if your tank is near a window in direct light you could try moving it and this will delay the algae problem.in the mean time i,d just use a scraper or clean sponge.hope this helps

they sell aquarium scrapers at wall mart but if you don't want to do it yourself you can buy a pleco they usually sell them at wal mart and theres probably no need to go to an expensive pet shop to get them and also plants will really help because they compete for the same nutrients air and light that the algae does so the more plants the less algae and the fish love more plants too but if you want to see your fish better like me i had to take most of my Oscars plants away because they hid behind whatever they could get and i wanted to see them all the time but there are a variety of bottom feeders but the only problem with those is once they clean the algae you have to buy algae tablets to get them to be able to eat and not starve and that puts more algae in the tank but they will eat it so it kind of works out in the end i hope you have good luck oh also i don't know why i didnt think if this its the best invention known to me when im trying to get rid of algae they sell magnets that have some sort of cloth on them that one side goes in the tank and one side stays out of it and you rub it all over your tank wall and the algae gets trapped in between the magnets and it works very well but you do have to clean those off every now and then to get the bad bacterialistic algae off of it good luck

Use an algae scraper or paper towel. Don't use a cloth towel, it will still have soap residue from the washing machine. Green algae is a good thing, and a sign that you are taking good care of your tank. Leave as much of it growing as you can tolerate. My whole tank is blanketed except for the front glass.

not to be abrupt or rude but a sponge. the best species to keep a fish tank clean is the human that does the maintenance of the tank. Don't rely on snails or algae eaters to do the job. They merely just help contain the problem. Weekly water changes plus adequate filtration will help keep it down as well as keeping the tank out of direct sunlight or running your lights to many hours. For me cleaning the viewing panel of my tanks has become just as much as daily maintenance as feedings. If you want you can get an algae magnet so you don't even have to get your hands wet. there are a few companies that make them and should be easily found at your local fish or pet supply store. http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Algae_Magnets_328.html

Addition: in most cases a pleco will only add to the problem. They dont only eat algae for one and they create a heavy bioload. I dont see them as being the miracle cure they are cracked up to be. Dont get me wrong they are beautiful fish and great when housed in the proper setup. on top of the huge bioload your koi produce adding a pleco is not the answer to ridding the algae.

a plecostemous or algae eater should fix that problem. If you have a large tank (bigger than 20 gal.) then i reccommend more than one, although plecostemouses can grow to about 16", so if you do get more than one, be prepared to get rid of one.

Once the problem is gone, you can feed them with algae chips/discs.
