It's beyond frustrating that no one takes grammar seriously.

It's frustrating. I worked as a design artist for a small newspaper for four years. I shouldn't have had to worry about my grammar, as I had an entire team of proofreaders at hand.

However, I found that I was constantly having to correct THEIR errors. For example, while typing an ad for a home for sale, I used "A Lot of Potential!" as a header for one of the houses. When the ad came back to me with corrections, I noticed that "A Lot" was marked out, and "Alot" was written in its place.

I took it back to the copy editor, who condescendingly told me that it would only be "A Lot" if they were selling bare ground. I was absolutely dumbfounded, and actually had to pull up a grammar website to prove my point before they would allow the ad to run as I had typed it.

However, the one that frustrates me the most is the fact that 99% of the people I encounter say "supposively" instead of "supposedly." I always ask them what "supposively" means, and they attempt to explain to me that it's when something is thought to be true, but isn't for certain. Interesting...

Sometimes I feel like I live on an entirely different planet than the vast majority of the population.

I just want to pick a nit here and point out that it's not really a grammar issue but a spelling issue. People seem to nunderstand the grammar of you're/your, they're/there/their just fine, but are clueless as to which spelling to use.

I personally blame the school systems, and spell checkers on word processors. Nobody has to know how to spell anymore, computers do it for them, and if that computer is wrong (like it often is), oh well. Not their fault. Heaven forbid anyone learn to do something on their own anymore.

Because people these days are stupid. You can read the newspaper and see these simple errors...

And to think, soon these are the people who are going to be running our country... and they don't know the difference between "you are" and the possessive "your"...

I think it's because so many people just rely on Spell Check- if your computer always thinks for you, you stop thinking. People think that they don't need to edit because it will be done for them.
