have you ever burst out laughing during an awkward silence? Once I went to this play, and the girl just found out her dad died, so everone was really really really quiet and tense, and i couldn't help but laugh, it's really weird, even though it was not funny, i couldn't help it.

Laughter is a natural way to release tension, and I do it all the time. Also, I think it may occur more often if your an empathetic person; you have a natural emotional response to other people's situations.
When my wife gets really, really pissed off at me and she's in my face and just tearing me to shreds, I react by wanting to laugh so badly. For the most part, I'm pretty good about biting on my tongue or forcing a scowl on my face because I know if I do laugh, I'll have to endure an even greater thrashing.

edit:
you know?
the kid's answer below mine reminded me of this one time in high school... i was in history and we were watching this movie about, like King-Something-or-Other of England.... anyways, in the movie (like it was a REAL movie, from Hollywood, not an educational documentary...) two people were riding on horses and one guy ran into a tree branch that was sticking out into the path... and the horse kept going, but he got knocked to the ground... lol!!!!
ok, ok, everyone in class just giggled a little bit, but i was LAUGHING.
...like, complete, I'm-going-to-pee: LAUGHING.
worst part is... i couldn't stop either. the movie was on a completely different scene and i was STILL trying to stifle my laughter from the horse riding part!!
i ended up, like basically CHOKING myself and i had to go the bathroom to try and forget that vision of the guy getting knocked off the horse by the tree branch....
i didn't get in trouble, but my teacher thought i was f*cking retarded.... eh.
