The only advice I can offer you is to pick up a book or magazine about gaming. There are plenty to choose from that will explain 'how to play' different games and list the odds of winning. For a beginner, you must realize certain 'realities' before you start: the house always wins, it's best to start small, learn as much as possible and pick a game you like. No one 'system' or strategy works effectively. No one goes to Las Vegas wanting to lose. Budget your money and don't let 'luck' make you careless. Rules of thumb: don't play more than an hour in any one casino, if you've double your money, run and don't attempt to 'win back' any losses, just swallow your pride and call it a day. Good luck.

Nobody plays to lose, but those huge building are not made possible by people coming into town and winning. There is no secret to winning big. If there were, I would be in a casino right now hitting it big.
To have best chance of winning, stick to these games: Blackjack, Craps, Video Poker, and Baccarat (or mini-baccarat).
Blackjack is the best table game to play if you learn basic strategy. There are many tutorials on the internet that teach you when you should hit/stand/double down/split/surrender, etc. Visit www.Blackjackinfo.com. Lots of free information. If you play perfect basic strategy, the house can have an advantage of less than .25%-.5%. If you do not play properly, then the house advantage can be from 5%-8% or more.
Craps is the most fun game in teh casino. It has an advantage of 1.41% for the house if you play pass/don't pass & come/don't come bets. If you take odds, the advantage can be even smaller. Craps is also a very fast game, you can win or lose money very fast.
Video Poker is the best game to play if you learn how to play properly and you find good machines.
Baccarat has an advantage about the same as craps, but it is generally a rich player's game. Expect very high table minimums. Mini-baccarat is the same game just on a smaller table. You will find lower minimums there.
Poker is one of the only ways to make money in teh casino because you are playing against other players and not the house. You do have to know what you are doing as it is a game the requires a lot of skill. If you have never played before in a casino, then you can expect to lose if you start now.
Sign up for players club at different casinos. Many will offer you freebees for gambling enough. Many will give you freebees for just signing up. Some places will let you play for free. You will see lots of ads for "$50 slot play". You get to play on a special bank of slot machines. You only win if you hit a jackpot. It is hard to win in that case, but you will not lose any money by doing this.
Generally, you will find teh better games are Downtown (looser slots, better video poker, better blackjack, lower table minimums, and more complementaries).
Do not play any blackjack game that pays 6:5 on blackjacks. Only play those that pay 3:2.
Find as many coupons and fun book as possible. With enough free match play, you can spend some time gambling with the casino's money.
Even with these tips, don't expect to win big. It is great if you do, but do not expect it to happen. Just go there and have fun. If you want to make money in Vegas, talk to a resort's HR department about getting a job.

The odds are definitely against you as everybody has said already, so don't count on it too much. You may consider yourself lucky if you break even. But sometimes you do win... I don't mean a lot but some... I remember the one time I went to Vegas (I'm Portuguese so it's a long way from home) I did win like 500 dollars or so in the end. Not too bad in the end... Not a fortune, of course... Anyway, I liked Vegas for its uniqueness, its colorful spirit. Hope you have a great time too.

The mathmatics are against you. Your best bet is Black Jack and Craps. Video poker is ok too. But you need to know the games. These games have the lowest house advantage.
Don't plan on winning big, few do. Better bet is go, see some shows, gamble a little and go home knowing you had a good time.
The only winners in Vegas are the casinos and those who don't gamble.

If you have a lot of money to loose...I mean spend then I would go for the tables or craps. I live in Vegas and I play the slots...when I play... but my husband plays the 3 card poker on the tables...we never win but break even most of the time. Good luck, and just and FYI the temps here are around 112.

I lived in Vegas for nine years. Very few people actually win. They don't build those huge casinos on your winnings. Good luck.
