The meaning of life is to live life to the fullest, don't waste time...do all the things you want to because you don't know how long you have on this earth..there is no meaning to life...we die...life goes on...more people die..life goes on until the sun explodes or global warming kills us.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

People often think too hard for this question. Some assume the meaning of life is to live the life to the fullest. Some assume is the deed that you accomplish in your life time.

However, the true meaning of life is...

It Goes On.

This life - as short as it is, is a school in which to perfect our characters. To be tested by God with making good decisions, and if we fail, then to be strengthened by Him, until we pass those tests of life, the test of love, goodness, unselfishness, kindness, fairness and on and on and on. Read the Psalms and Proverbs in the Old Testament. They're easy to read and very satisfying. Most every success teacher, whether in seminars, classes or CD's or DVD's most often quote character refinement techniques to be truly satisfied in life.
Don't waste your whole life wandering in the expectation that external and material things will fulfill you. Only the development and refinement of your character, with harmony and with true selfless love, will truly fulfill your entire wilderness of life !
Study the most successful loved people throughout the ages, and the love they developed for the world and for God Almighty, and His Nature and His world here and above. Refine your character. That it the Meaning of Life. And then after this life, you continue to exist, in the same manner as you lived on earth. Makes sense doesn't it? Yes Indeed....

The point is to stumble through it YOUR way.

When you accept that you are you and totally unique and this is your life, and only you are responsible for it, then you can work on what you want to achieve and steps to take to make the things that you want to happen become possible.

Thinking more positive thoughts and accepting each bad thing as a life lesson makes you want to change things.

The question is flawed. It falsely assumes that life must have a meaning.

Meaning and purpose are subjective values given to things by humans. For example, humans say the word "door" to mean that thing we use to get in our house, etc. That's what we mean by it; that's the meaning of it. We build stoves for the purpose of cooking.

Meaning and purpose are given to things by living and conscious beings. Thus, it is impossible for life to have an inherent purpose or meaning.

the meaning of life is specific to everyone. Basicly the meaning of life is whatever drives/interests you. Anything that you do in life is driven by whatever interests you. The purpose/reason of/for your life is your passion.

reading the previous answers makes me realize that existentialism is in fact alive and kicking in america.

my thoughts on the meaning of life?.....there is none. even if there was one, no one will know until this life has ended. when they move onto the next existence, then they will be privy. until then were all just drawing straws.

That time from which we are born and which we die and the perpetual rebirth of the planet. To me life is the Joy, Sorrow, and Sadness in between that action.
