Hi there,
just been spell checking an assignment, and wondered if anyone knows the best way to present ages. E.g if some ones age was 3 years and 2 months, would you say so like that, or use '3 years, 2 months' or use '3. 2 years' or something different? I need the most formal as it for post grad essay.
Thank you :-)

First of all, do you need to say exactly how old the person is? Could you not just say "so and so is three years old?"... If not I would say three years and two months.

Also, I was taught not to use numerical numbers in writing (such as 3 and 2 months)... I would make sure to type out the word.

Good luck!

Use three years and two months. You are supposed to write out the number (1-9). Beginning with 10, you show the arabic number.
In general, write out the first nine cardinal (1-9) numbers (except for address numbers 2-9, dates, decimals, game scores, highways, latitude/longitude, mathematical expressions, measurement/weight, money/financial data, percentages, proportion, scientific expressions, statistics, technical expressions, temperature, time, unit modifiers, votes, and numbers not written out in a proper noun) and any number that begins a sentence. Use figures for the number 10 and above.

In conversation I would say three years two months, but in a formal report I would probably use 3.2 years, if there is a strict word limit!

Good luck with the essay!

You're in grad school and don't know this? Sad, just...sad.
