I personally have never played hockey in my life, nor do I plan to....so I will not claim to be a "wannabe" or anything of that nature. I love hockey simply because it is exciting and real. Of all the sports in this world, IMHO, I think that hockey players are the most genuine about their "job", they are the most physically fit and the most talented, but receive less pay, less glory, etc. They give their time to promote their sport because they LOVE it. I have yet to come across any pro player that wasn't the most cordial and down to earth person. (cannot say that about football or basketball). I have to admit, I love to see the physical side of the game, it's basic and animalistic but at the same time, it's a team effort and when a team is in sync with each other, it's like watching a ballet unfold in front of you. That's what sports are supposed to be. I have to admit I do love to watch two guys punching the daylights out of each other, and believe that the enforcers are key to a good game. I get excited when I see the glass in front of me shake when it's hit, seeing fish and octapi being thrown on the ice (and the ball caps when a player is hot and gives us a hat trick), the inevitable "super fan" who makes it onto the jumbotron every game, the young kids in their favorite player's jersey with their faces pressed against the glass during warmup, watching every move the players make and hearing the goal horn blaring and the roar of the crowd....I get excited because these guys are out there working their butts off to entertain the crowd, and their efforts have paid off.

Real die hard fans are not all wana-be players. I'm not saying there arent some out there. To be a fan of Hockey or any sport there has to be some interest. It could be the fights, the fast paced action, or even just the atmosphere.
I personally hate watching Baseball on TV, but I still like the sport. I wont turn down tickets for a game thats for sure.
I hate Basketball, its dull for me.
You can't be totaly into a sport and not know atleast some of the players its impossible. Its the people that say they like a team/sport but know nothing about it that make me angry. Or the people that switch the teams they like from year to year based on the previous years achievements. Buffalo nearly made it to the cup 2 years in a row and I see more blue and gold apparel now then I did 5 years ago and that makes me sick. If you are going to support a team you should support them reguardless.

Like someone else said I have never played hockey nor do I plan to but I'm still a diehard fan. I love the intensity of the game and just how much FUN it is just to watch it. Fun is the oprative word there. That is the reason most people are hockey fans (even if they don't play), because of the enjoyment and fun they get out of watching a game even if it is just on tv. While there are people out there who watch hockey and are wannabes too, I think a majority of hockey fans just watch games and get really into them becuase the love for the game and they probably wish they were at the arena cheering their team on in person.
BTW watching Nascar on tv is boring but if you ever get the chance to go to a race in person do it because it is 100x better and a lot of fun.

Youre probly the type of person that only enjoys playing, not watching. Here are some things that people who enjoy watching it experience, unlike you:
-major adrenalyne rush. You just get so into the moment its crazy. You want your team to score so bad that when they get so close and miss, you automatically scream, or you get so upset when the other team scores you scream, or you can also scream when a players gets checked, a pass is intercepted..etc. anything to make you unhappy or happy is worth screaming about.
-love for the team like no other
-love for every player on that team whether theyve met them or not
Im a die hard devils fan and i also play, but i know a lot of die hard devils fans who dont play. Like my dad. He hasnt played in over 25 years but the feeling of hockey will forever live on in those who have stopped playing. Now for those who never played and are die-hard fans? It doesnt mean theyre wannabe's, it just means they love the sport of hockey. You dont always need to play to feel the adrenalyne rush. That just the intensity of hockey.

if you play hockey i don't understand how you can't get into it and don't understand why people love it so much. People get so wrapped up into it because your supporting and rooting for you state or town everyone wants there state or town to be considered the best and thats what causes people to become die hard fans. Also hockey is a sport that is so exciting that you just can't help getting angry at a bad call or being happy that your team just made a great trade.

Hockey is life........What can possibly be the problem when a person is passionate about their favorite sport??? Hockey is bigger than anyone in this forum...We cheer our favorite teams and players and hope we see our team skating with the Cup when the season comes to an end. The game bleeds excitement and can bring a casual fan in a packed arena to the edge of their seat and beyond...If you don't get it yet you probably never will.....It's a hockey thing you wouldn't understand....Drop the puck already...Let the game begin!!!!!

People only yell at the television, because the referees are blind and stupid. They usually make stupid, pointless calls. People love to see people getting checked into the boards and people losing teeth. They love to watch quick, talented skaters, move a puck around with their stick, and usually make it look good. People care about players being traded because some players are really good, or they just bring the team together. Maybe their favourite player has gone to another team and you don't want to fly out to Washington just to watch your favourite player when they easily could've stayed with Montreal, and you had seasons tickets for the Habs this year. We watch hockey because it is facinating unlike Nascar. Like that dude said, why would you watch cars drive around in a circle for 200 laps?

It is, as one person said, an adrenaline rush for us fans. We like watching sports. We like the excitement that it generates when your home/favorite team scores. We like the animosity it creates when two teams from the same general area go at it 6-7 times a season.
Also can you name for me one mainstream sport that actually gives you 2 sports for the price of one on a relatively consistent basis, ice hockey and bare fisted boxing..... I can't. For some that is the best reason to go.
"I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out" and vice versa.

ROFLMA
I am so not guilty of that *COUGH CHOKE*
it's like anything else in life, everyone is passionate about something, and there doesnt' have to be a reason for it either.
I've been a fan for many years, I have never played hockey, actually, I really wouldn't enjoy playing the game myself at all....

I've never played hockey. i grew up on baseball..bleh!
The amount of skill, muscle, and stamina you need to play this sport is amazing.
It's fast paced and most of the players are down to earth guys. I've been to a few charity events and chatted w/them.
