i assume you are talking about transmissions.a standard also known as a manual trans must be shifted manually usually involving a clutch to change gear ratios. an automatic trans you must manually select which range ,PRNDetc.when in D position the trans will shift through the different gear ratios as needed automatically.hence the name automatic. hope that clears it up for you.

Standard is an old term for the vehicle you were buying, stick, manual or standard transmission was a base model, if you paid more you got and automatic. As times changed more and more people moved away from sticks and so automakers started to make the automatic the base model for most vehicles.

It's talking about the Transmission. If you have an automatic transmission, that means you don't have to shift the gears up or down. The transmission is programmed to take care of that for you, hence the term automatic. It's better for any begginer driver.
If you have a Standard, it means it's a manual transmission. Meaning you have to use a floor shifter to shift up or down the gear box. It's more difficult but gives you more power and better fuel economy.

These terms refer to types of transmissions.
Standard, also known as manual, is the type of transmission in which you shift the gears throughout the driving range. This will utilize a "stickshift" and a clutch pedal located to the left of the brake pedal
Automatic transmissions shift gears using a system of servos and sensors, reliving the driver from having to shift.
There are also "autostick" models, which let the driver choose.

Automatic - the type of transmission that shifts gears automatically. You just give the car gas and it goes.
Standard - the type of transmission where you have to shift the gears manually (Stick Shift).

They are talking about the transmissions.
An auto will do all the shifting by itself.
The manual one, will force you to use the clutch and manually shift the gears.
