80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

The question is flawed. It falsely assumes that life must have a meaning.
Meaning and purpose are subjective values given to things by humans. For example, humans say the word "door" to mean that thing we use to get in our house, etc. That's what we mean by it; that's the meaning of it. We build stoves for the purpose of cooking.
Meaning and purpose are given to things by living and conscious beings. Thus, it is impossible for life to have an inherent purpose or meaning.

Who says that life has to have a meaning. The question is old and when looked deeper extremely religious. There doesn't have to be a set meaning, you decide for yourself.
If there was a worldwide purpose to everyone I think it is just basically to survive. Grim way of looking at it, but that is everyones purpose deep down, however your own purpose is up to you, mine is just to be happy.

There are many meanings of life and possibilities of choice and even impositions of choice of some meaning of life.
For many the meaning of life is to eat and drink and grow big and so get duties and also partner and so enjoy love and get off-spring and so get more duties always hoping to be able to survive until dying of old age in their own bed.
For many the meaning of life is to fight and die young as male? heroes or martyrs for their own tribe or fatherland or motherland finally gaining glorious access to their 115 luscious virgins of yonder paradise .
For many the meaning of life is to serve their own God thru humbly working and obeying the orders and precepts passed on by the legitimate representatives of their God on this Earth. Some may find the definitive holy meaning to their life by becoming servants of God or spouses of Jesus.
There are indeed many meanings of life and several possibilities of choice. There are many alternative meanings of life that we are unable to think about, of which we so far know nothing about. There are meanings of life that have their own meaning and their own life and use all other life and meanings of life as their own instruments to their own ends of which we still know nothing about, or of which we don't dare think about.
There is some sort of transcendental meaning behind all this that we are not able to fetch nor to grasp. Not yet. Maybe never in our present level of evolution.
