Do you mean "sickle cell"?

"Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder that mostly affects people of African ancestry, but also occurs in other ethnic groups, including people who are of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent."

Sickle Cell Anemia is genetic.
When the ph (acidity) in an erythrocite (red blood cell) drops then the cell will take on a sickle shape. A sickle has a long curved blade used to manually harvest grains.

When a person has the trait from only one parent then it is often not a problem. People with Sickle Cell trait are immune from malaria. Malaria is a parasite that attacks red blood cell during one of it's developing stages. When the parasite enters a red blood cell with the Sickle trait then it will change shape and the body will disguard it.

Thos who have sickle trait from both parents often go in to "crisis". Over exertion and stress can cause a slight drop in blood ph and causae millions of red blood cells to sickle at once. This clogs the capillaries and results in great pain. Usually in the large muscles like the arms and legs. It also can break capillaries in the white part of the eye and causes a permanent yellowish hue. Sickle crisis can be deadly if enough cells sickle at once. Where ever there are capillaries, sickle crisis can cause damage. That means everywhere in the body is subject to harm.

A little seven year old girl walked in to the hospital with her mother while in the early stages of crisis. She was admitted to the pediatric ICU where I helped take care of her. She was dead in five hours. This is an extreme case. It is not always devestating but it can be.
