I do hate that. You don't have to listen to them if they are being abusive though. Ask them to discontinue their behavior or you will be forced to hang up on them. Be cordial and do not raise your voice or sound sarcastic.
Sometimes this will defuse the situation.

Yes, people get all pissy on the phone because they can't see you face to face, plus they know you aren't going to want to lose your job. I think they are cowards.

I just hang up. I'm my own supervisor now so I can finally do that. In fact,it was one of my main incentives for a promotion.

yeah...but i've been doing this a long time. i just tell myself they are living a terrible miserable existence and my life is way better....then i breathe and allow them to finish their rant.
