My girlfriend is 29 years old, healthy, and the mother of a three-year-old. She breast fed for several months, but stopped over two years ago.

During intercourse, I was alarmed (and, admittedly, bizarrely turned on) to find that she was lactating. We went right out and bought a pregnancy test, which had a negative result. She has an appointment with her doctor to investigate this, but I'm not that patient. What could this mean?

She is pregnant
or in a rare instance, hormones resulting from teasing the breasts in a manner to induce lactating. Such as sucking.

I'm not a medical professional, but one thing that could be causing the leaking is a side effect of medication, particularly if she takes anti-depressants. On the other hand, it could also be a pituitary tumor, called a prolactinoma, which causes prolactin levels to be elevated. This sounds scary but is easily treated with a medication called Parlodel (bromocriptine) if it is not too big. If left untreated, such a tumor can press on nerves causing damage to eyesight and other problems. It can also interfere with fertility, since the elevated prolactin levels affect other hormone levels. Many women don't know they have a tumor until they are treated for infertility. So please have your wife see your doctor for a simple blood test to determine what your prolactin level is or to discuss the side effects of any medications you may be taking. Good luck.

ummm is she a woman? lol Why can't she lactate? I am sorry-I always find these situations amusing...

Seeing as though your girlfriend has children-her body automatically started lactating. It is NOT uncommon for it to happen even more so if she has high hormone levels of Progestran. If it is bothersome to you or her-go to a OBGYN

This is galactorrhea. See the link for more information. There are several causes, and sometimes the cause remains unknown. If it persists, she should seek medical attention. One possible cause is a pituitary tumor.
